April through January, spend a day with the family and head to Georgetown, Colorado, only 40 miles east of historic Breckenridge, for a train ride with Alpenglow Adventures. Combining an authentic wild west train ride with an actual working silver mine tour, and a gloriously scenic drive, you’ll have more fun in a single day than most people have in a whole week!
The fun begins when the sprinter van picks you up at your Book Breck Vacation Home. There are several options available, but the most popular choice is the Georgetown Loop Railroad aboard the “Silver Queen of the Rockies” which runs early May to the first week in January. Your journey to Georgetown in the sprinter van will make a brief stop high atop Loveland Pass at 11,990 feet to enjoy the splendor of the Continental Divide and great photo ops.
Your train adventure begins at Devil’s Gate Train Station in Georgetown where each guest is provided a complimentary water bottle and sunscreen prior to boarding. A photographer will snap a few pics of your group in front of the steaming locomotive. And no, you don’t have to shell out an extra $50 for your commemorative photos! Guests receive FREE digital copies by email.
Once aboard, you can choose between open rail cars or roofed cars. Three blasts from the whistle and the journey begins! The powerful locomotive will travel through lush forests and cross the Clear Creek eight times. At the first stop, guests will have an hour to explore an 1880s silver mine escorted by a knowledgeable guide. After reboarding, experience the thrill as the train completes a 360 degree loop above Georgetown, suspended 95 feet above the valley floor. The Silver Queen is the ONLY operating railroad in North America that makes a complete loop in the open air to gain altitude. Hold on!
You’re sure to have worked up an appetite at this point! Upon return to Devil’s Gate Train Station, guests are treated to a noon-time meal at Georgetown Park in the Victorian Gazebo at town center. Relax with your family and enjoy the full-spread, all-you-can-eat picnic
Lunch is followed by an impromptu magic show complete with prizes for the younger guests, and then another photo op at the Lunch Log, said to be one of the most endearing family settings in America.
The last part of the tour is a leisurely stroll through the frontier downtown promenade. If you don’t have the full 8 hours to spend, check out the 5-hour or 3-hour options , the same tour without the frills.
