Breckenridge Winter Trip Preparations

You’ve reserved a fabulous vacation home through Book Breck, booked your flights, and packed your bags!  Winter trip preparations don’t stop there.  For our guests flying into Denver International Airport and renting a vehicle for the 2-hour trek to the High Country of Breckenridge via I-70, we’ve got a bit more information that will save you time, money, and quite possibly a few headaches so that every phase of your Breckenridge vacation is big fun and minimal stress.

In case you missed our email regarding the Colorado Chain Law, please read now.  Winter snow storms are a common occurrence in our part of the country and the Chain Law can be activated at any time during a storm.  The snow is beautiful, but can make driving very hazardous!  To help prevent auto accidents, loss of traction, hefty fines, or blocking a roadway, you must be prepared for the Chain Law.

Before you leave the lot in a rental car, ensure the tires meet the tread requirements and that the vehicle is a 4WD.  For non-4WD vehicles, we strongly recommend you stop a pick up a set of chains.  Should the weather end up being pleasant during your stay, you can always return the chains on the way back to the airport.

While Summit County has everything you need in the way of goods and services, you are likely to save time and money by making a stop in or just west of Denver before leaving the front range. Here are our two favorite choices:

1. Applewood Village: For a one-stop shopping experience to pick up chains, groceries, liquor, and any miscellaneous items the family (even the pets) might need, take exit 264 while driving west along I-70 towards the mountains and check out Applewood Village at 3540 Youngfield St in Wheat Ridge, CO.

Take exit 264 toward W 32nd Ave
Drive to Youngfield St in Wheat Ridge
Applewood Village Shopping Center includes Walmart, King Soopers grocery store, Applejack Wine & Spirits, Starbucks, and Petsmart.  Within 5 miles are Target, a Walmart Supercenter, and a variety of auto supply stores.
2. Walmart Supercenter in Evergreen:  Take exit 252 off I-70 to Swede Gulch Road. Nearby convenient store and fast-food available as well.
A winter trip likely entails plans to ski or snowboard while in town. It might seems tempting to pick up rental skis in one of the small towns along the way to save money, but if you end up getting equipment that does not work or fit well, you’ll be stuck with it. We don’t advise picking up ski/ride rentals until you have arrived in town. Save money by renting through one of our ski rental partners.
3. City Market in Dillon:  While we have a City Market in Breckenridge as well, the City Market in Dillon is larger with a wider variety and they do not charge for shopping bags like the City Market in Breckenridge. Because the store is bigger, the crowds are usually smaller as well.
Lastly, we’ve also got the answers on savings for lift tickets in our Where to Find Discounted Lift Tickets blog.
Book Breck wants our guests to feel like you have a local friend who can share insider knowledge.  We’re happy to answer the smallest questions, so please do not hesitate to ask!  (970) 453-2999.
