Breck 150: The 150th anniversary of the town of Breckenridge

Long before Breckenridge was a ski resort, it was a town. For the last 150 years Breckenridge has remained a true town and this summer we celebrate the history, heritage and characters that made this Victorian mining town great.

As part of the anniversary celebration, the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance will be restoring and unveiling historic sites for the public to enjoy. First on the list is the Grand Re-Opening of the Edwin Carter Museum. Saturday May 23, 2009 guests are invited to trace the evolution of Professor Edwin Carter's life as miner, taxidermist and scientist via the new interactive theater room and learning center.

The weekend of June 20-21, 2009 marks Breckenridge's annual heritage celebration known as Kingdom Days. There are activities and events for everyone including historic mine tours, museum exhibits, gun fights, live music, arts and crafts and the Annual Outhouse Races.

In July, the National Repertory Orchestra celebrates its 50th birthday with their Anniversary Bash on Friday July 3, 2009 at the Beaver Run Resort. The Gold Rush Gala, celebrating Breckenridge's mining heritage, takes place Friday July 31, 2009. This event is a benefit for the Breckenridge Music Festival and will feature dinner and dancing.

The crowning event this summer is the Breck150 Grand Celebration, August 8-10, 2009. Festivities begin at the Summit County Courthouse with a special community ceremony. County and Town officials will extract and unveil the building's cornerstone time capsule and contents, which were put in place by the Masons on July 31, 1909. After the ceremony there will be music and dancing at a street party which includes live bluegrass music, kids' activities and food and drink specials. The evening culminates with a Grand Fireworks display over the town of Breckenridge.

The Mining and Railroad weekend takes place August 15-16, 2009 celebrating the critical role railroads played in helping Breckenridge develop during the mining era and beyond. The weekend will showcase the historic railroad route from Breckenridge over Boreas Pass.
